Is the gospel true? In Knowing
Christ Today, author Dallas Wil-
lard maintains that authentic
Christian beliefs and practices
need to be treated as a reliable
source of knowledge carrying
the same weight of authority as
science, philosophy and other
intellectual disciplines. Willard
argues that many people--both
inside and outside the church--no
longer see the Christian faith as a
source of knowledge, a truth that
can guide our way of living on a daily basis. Instead, our
culture has redefined moral knowledge not as objective
truth but as a matter of personal preference or opinion.
Christian leaders are exhorted to reclaim their faith and
its associated morality as a body of knowledge (truth)
that can be tested and proclaimed with confidence. Ac-
cording to Willard, knowledge of God (not just belief
or opinion) can give Christians full assurance and the
boldness to share the gospel with others. Deep intimacy
with God is open to anyone who intentionally seeks Him
through prayer, Scripture, worship, silence and solitude,
and many other disciplines. This trailblazing book goes
on to tackle the thorny issue of pluralism, as well as proof
that God exists and that He created the universe.
Have you ever considered why
The Salvation Army--a $3.7 billion
organization with an underpaid
and overworked labor force--has
been ranked by Forbes magazine
as the most effective organization
in America? Business analyst Peter
Drucker once gave the Army a rat-
ing that outranked not just other
non-profits but all of the leading
corporations of the day.
In a revised edition of Lead-
ership Secrets of The Salvation
Army, former National Commander Robert A. Watson and
USA Today editor Ben Brown explain why the nearly 150
year-old Army continues to have success. Watson and
Brown stress the importance of the Army's focus on One
Big Idea, which satisfies the universal human need to con-
nect with something larger than ourselves. Both the values
on which the Army was founded and its superior purpose
enable it to face new challenges with change and modern-
ization. In an era when many organizations have curtailed
their goals, the Army has expanded its work into a total
of 126 countries and continues to increase its services in
communities in the USA. The authors detail how the Army
achieves efficiency in its efforts while innovatively applying
its essential mission to meet human need.
