Disasters, personal crises, situations that dash our hopes,
dreams and sometimes our physical well being, also can crystallize what is best and most meaningful about
human life. God uses such trials, whether in the form of personal challenge or tragedy or as the result of sudden
storms such as the tornado that demolished Moore, Oklahoma this spring, not to punish, but to cause people
to grow in love, service, character and faith. The Salvation Army contributed to the outpouring of support for
victims of this disaster by providing food, shelter, counseling, solace and support. Such service in and of itself is
vital as emergency personnel rush to address the point of need. The larger meaning is that such efforts are signs
pointing to what we can become, how we can begin again, how we can live out the full meaning of salvation.
