Essence
A powerful new movie to be released
on April 12th is the first featurelength,
faithbased film to tackle human traf-
ficking, according to producer Brent
Martz. Not Today, produced by Friends
Media, stars Cody Longo as a spoiled
young American who encounters traf-
ficking of children among India's Dalit
caste and is forever changed. "Dalits
are not considered human," says Martz.
"They are used and abused and have no
recourse or avenues toward justice. The
world needs to understand that slavery
still exists. Today young children are
bought and sold like cattle. Little girls
are forced into the dark and illicit sex
trade. Young boys and girls are coerced
to beg in the streets and bring their
proceeds back to line the pockets of
thugs who abuse them at night. Chris-
tianity tells these victims that they are
made in the image of God."
According to the National Under-
ground Railroad Freedom Center India
Conference, more than 1.2 million chil-
dren are trapped in human trafficking
as child prostitutes.
Typical audience response to ad-
vance screenings of Not Today call the
movie a "powerful reminder and call to
action ... gripping, informative ... hear-
breaking and eye opening ... you cannot
walk away unchanged."

INQUIRIES
&ANSWERS
As a ministry tool, the War Cry
provides those at the frontlines of
human need with a way to present
the good news of salvation and
inform anyone in or associated with
The Salvation Army about its mission
and programs. Hundreds of inquiries
come to the offices of the War Cry
daily, requesting everything from
guidance to resources to referral
to Salvation Army locations for
assistance and practical and spiritual
support. These inquiries come
through email, www.thewarcry.org,
facebook, phone calls, letters, and
in response to the coupon carried in
each issue of the magazine.
One primary mission of the War Cry
is to bring people to the Savior of
the world, Jesus Christ. Last year,
181
people used the coupon to ask
for information on How to Receive
Christ, and
156
individuals reported
that they Received Christ through
the War Cry.
Other inquiries
received included:
According to the agencies advocating for child safety,
an estimated
681,000 children were victims of child abuse in the USA in 2011,
and 1,570 children died
as a result of abuse or neglect. Congress estab-
lished National Child Abuse Prevention Month to encourage consideration of
how a community that addresses such concerns as early childhood develop-
ment, parental support and maternal mental health is more likely to foster
nurturing families and healthy children. Factors known to prevent and reduce
child abuse and neglect include parental resilience, nurturing and attach-
ment, social connections, knowledge about parenting and child develop-
ment, social and emotional competence of children and practical supports
for parents. Such factors are outlined in "Preventing Child Maltreatment and
Promoting Well-Being: A Network for Action 2012 Resource Guide
,"
available through the Child Welfare Information Gateway.
